Are you in a supportive Environment?

Whether your Human Design Environment is Caves, Markets, Kitchens, Mountains, Valleys, or Shores, you can do a personal check-in to see if your Environment is energizing you or relaxing you depending on your Environment Style.

Each Human Design Environment has tonal fixing; it has a LEFT side and a RIGHT side. When viewing your four Variables; the fours arrows that flank the head of your Bodygraph — If your Environment is fixed left, you are an Observed Environment Style. If your Environment is fixed right, you are an Observer Environment Style.

That’s why you can be Caves selective or blending, or Mountains, active or passive. If you’re an Observed Environment (selective, internal, wet, active, narrow, natural) in order to thrive, your Environment BRINGS OUT your natural level of activity. Human Design can’t tell you exactly what that level of activity is, but your experimentation process will reveal that to you. It’s fun to learn!

If you’re an Observer Environment (blending, external, dry, passive, wide, artificial) in order to thrive, your Environment relaxes you and sets you at ease.

“It’s important to understand that if you have an Observed (left) Environment, your Environment gives you a level of activity, a place where you don’t sit still/relax – a place that keeps you going; keeps you busy. You’re focused on things-to-do.”

Observe(d) Environments

Let’s say you’re an Observed (left) Environment — Caves Selective, for example — and you go to your friend’s house; another Cave! Woo! Except there... you’re chill and sleepy and slumped on the couch. You’re not engaged. You’re lethargic. This is a sign you’re misaligned; as a Left Person, your Environment brings out your activity. You’re not designed to sit back and passively watch, but come alive in a way when the space ignites you.

If you’re an Observed Environment Style and you don‘t have your natural activity level, you’re vulnerable to unsupportive conditioning in that space. Determine what your natural level of activity is and when you feel your best. You can be Caves cozy at your friend’s place, but notice your activity levels and what engages and activates you. It doesn’t mean you’re necessarily running around, but you’re activated and attentive to the scene.

Observe(r) Environments

As an Observer (Right) Environment, I like to look at Environment as a stage. A show that I love to watch! If your Environment is Observer (blending, external, dry, passive, wide, artificial) you’re in a supportive Environment when you’re not active at all. That can really trip us up since so much of our outer reality has been encouraging us to hustle and bust our bums. It’s as if we’re more valued if we’re busier. But this is not true, and in fact very damaging for Observer Environment People.

If you’re an Observer Environment Person, you’re here to chill! To relax. You’re NOT here to buzz around. Your Environment nourishes you in a completely different way than Left People. You’re simply here for different experiences.

I have three Variables that are left (active, strategic, focused), and I’m an Observer Environment style. I can have a very very busy mind that is highly active, but my body is another thing altogether.

If you’re Left, you’re “observed”. You’re here to be focused on things-to-do. And if you’re Right, you’re an “observer”. You’re here to take in what’s going on around you. But it’s important as an Observer Environment that you have SOMETHING to observe. Your body will naturally relax when you’re in a supportive space for you, and you’ll always be observing something; you’ll be taking something in. Be aware that you can observe something that is unhealthy for you or have nothing to observe and that can feel not-so-great.

“THE ENVIRONMENT IS ALSO SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT THE FOUNDATION OF WHO YOU ARE. SO IF YOU‘RE LEFT, YOU‘RE HERE TO BE ACTIVE IN THIS LIFE. THIS IS WHAT‘S GOOD FOR YOU. IF YOU‘RE RIGHT, YOU‘RE NOT HERE TO BE ACTIVE IN THIS LIFE. THAT‘S WHAT‘S GOOD FOR YOU. THE JOKE THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE COUCH POTATOES. SOME PEOPLE ARE DESIGNED TO BE COUCH POTATOES. IT‘S NOT THAT THERE‘S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM. THEY‘RE DESIGNED TO BE COUCH POTATOES. IT‘S TERRIFIC.”

Real Life Example

I was at a wedding where there was music and dancing — singing and hugging; a huge celebration with lots to watch. In my first life phase, this was totally my scene. I’d grab the mic, sing, hype the crowd… However this was my first celebration where I was newly “on the roof”. Everyone wanted me to get up and sing and participate but I was like, “Nah I’m happy watching!” I’m enjoying what everyone is doing and I get a kick out of it. I didn’t feel like singing that time I guess!

As a 6/2 Profile, the first third of my life I was very involved; I was very much in the trenches, experimenting, figuring it out. There was a noticeable shift when I entered my second life phase, and I immediately felt less pressure to “get in the thick of it” and participate. It took me realizing what a pleasure and delight it is to observe things once I accepted that’s what I was here for.

I am sincerely delighted by watching my kid play or focus on something… but I don’t actually love getting in there myself. I’d rather watch. It’s just a different reality. My child is also an Observed Environment and always wants me to see what he’s doing.

The Environment is the foundation of who we are. If you’re Observed/Left, you’re here to be ACTIVE in this life. If you’re Observer/ Right, you’re NOT here to be active in this life. A lot of Right Environment people have trouble accepting that, because you can see how that “busy” hustle our reality forces upon us has conditioned Observer People.
