Transform your Mudroom into a Shores Human Design Environment

The mudroom is a space in the back of the home, usually near the garage or rear entrance. We often find the home laundry set up in this space.

Where your entrance acts like the front palace to your home, energetically influencing the flow of chi that enters your dwelling, the back entrance or mudroom acts like the sitting palace of your home.

Any space in your home can be designed to set up to suit your Environment Variable in Human Design — even the mudroom.

You may even notice that you sometimes enter spaces that you just love; what is it you like about them? Have you ever walked into a gorgeous laundry room, pristine bathroom, or luxe cooking space that you adored? What parts made you feel good?

Building your Environment spatial awareness can happen in every room of the home. Let’s look at a few things to watch for or play with in your mudroom:

Storage Cabinets

Build storage cabinets into the space so you can’t even see them! Tall cabinets for additional storage of cleaning supplies, sports gear, or seasonal items are a great addition to this space, while taking care of hiding them to create a streamlined illusion. You may not even have handles visible on your cabinets, but something like push doors to reveal a whole other world within your cabinets!

Full-length mirror

A full-length mirror is the perfect addition for quick outfit checks before heading out the back door to your latest party or event. It’s always great to give yourself a once-over before you leave home, and Shores People have a special connection to mirrors and what they reflect.

Add personalized decor

Family photos, heirlooms or decorative elements can make the space inviting and personal to you, while displaying some of the cool, dynamic things you’ve collected in your life. Maybe it’s a collection of baskets to store your items in within your cupboards, or a handmade collection of Turkish towels, or a mosaic of family photos that show your growth and stories — add your personal touch to create a welcome-home atmosphere.

Smart Technology

Like Valleys, I love the idea of a Shores Person integrating smart systems into their space for greater control over things like lighting, temperature, and even security. Since the mudroom is often close to the back entrance, it makes for a great space to install a security system or thermostat to control the heat and cooling in your entire home. You can even keep your Roomba robots in the mudroom! Welcome alllll the robots into your other-wordly Shores atmosphere.

Try a deep moody colour

When you walk into your mudroom, you have the potential to create a whole new world — which can be regulating to you every time you cross that mudroom’s threshold and enter the wider part of your home, or your back door/garage area. Go bright, deep, or moody in this space, but give the room some emotion and personality so it really sings. Smaller spaces are a great place to experiment with colour! Imagine how this will make you feel every time you walk in using the back door.

Create a galley-style space

Like galley kitchens, a galley-style space creates a hallway or flow through the center of a room, while lining two of the walls with counters, cabinets or shelving. It creates two fully functionable and operational “sides” to use in the space. Whether you have your laundry on one side and a sink on the other, or simply have two separate counters, experiment with a galley-style space to create flow and two sides in your mudroom.
