Get Picky About the Room You’re in

You get to design your home to meet your needs, and based on your lifestyle and priorities, sometimes it makes sense for your bedroom to move upstairs, or your sunroom to become your art studio, or your primary bedroom and ensuite to become your creative hub. Before perfecting your Home Office, first consider the spaces in your home with fresh eyes and whether they might work best for your needs rather than the home’s original setup. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your Home Office or more than other rooms in your home, that should really inform and influence which room in your home is designated as your Home Office. Remember, you can do whatever you want; this is YOUR home. YOU make the rules!

Seasonal Updates and Refreshes

What elements can you bring into your work environment that require regular updates and refreshes? Could that be a plant or a biweekly bouquet? Could that be a magazine subscription or a growing print collection? A Nespresso order? Consider how you can encourage fresh energy to enter your space each season. I highly recommend a seasonal cleaning ritual, seasonal GST or tax review, or quarterly furniture rearrangements. Even fresh seasonal marketing will keep your work current and in season. Markets People receive more benefits than others from this regular refresh because they are the most vulnerable to things falling out of season, expiring, or not feeling fresh. This will have a direct impact on your abundance and growth in your career.

Find Your Spot

When you enter your Home Office, where does your body naturally want to go? Imagine the space is empty and everything is cleared out - do you want to fold down into a cozy corner? Do you want to tuck beneath a window and sit in the sunlight? Do you crave standing beneath the coloured light of a wonderful light fixture? Consider what area feels best for you and then build the space around that area. Play up the best spot in the room or environment. Using Feng Shui principles, the room’s back corner, which is diagonally across from the entrance, is considered the command position of the room. Notice if you feel good in this spot or another. And whichever place calls to your body, put your desk or work surface there so you can spend as much time in that area as possible. If that doesn’t make sense for the layout of the room, try a really great accent chair that you could sit in periodically.

Move Your Things Around

Can your workspace handle seasonal switch-ups? Perhaps you have more photo shoots at a certain time of the year, or, depending on your projects, perhaps you need access to different materials. Consider your trade or craft and what themes happen across the four seasons of the year. What materials do you need for each season of work, and how can they be readily accessible to you? This feeds into your need to keep things fresh in your workspace by regularly (seasonally) updating them or switching them around. If you can not move the furniture around because things have been customized (this is great for you), or you do not have the physical capacity to rearrange things, bringing in new or fresh decor elements can create the same effect. Just be sure to put some things away if they’re not in season rather than keep them out. It’s good to rotate your things from time to time.

Let it Exude Your Style

Customize as much as possible! If you’re in a small space, how can you make it your own? If you’re in a shared coworking environment, how can your accessories and instruments and tools be so obviously yours? If you’re in a home studio or office that is specifically yours, what key pieces of furniture, materials, decor, and design are available to you within that space’s size and dimensions? Painting the room, selecting the lighting, building closets or built-in bookshelves — all this customization is extra beneficial for a Markets Person as they are the most selective and sensitive Environment in the Human Design System. Being around what you specifically like is, literally, the most healthy for you.

Try Using In-Season Decor

Perhaps you want to put up a Christmas tree or garland during the winter months, or maybe you strewn your space with fresh bouquets in the spring. Consider adding seasonal decor to inspire seasonal shifts in your dealings and exchanges. This may even inspire marketing and promotional ideas depending on your vocation.

It’s All About the Desk

If you invest in one quality piece in your space, deeply consider your desk. Like Carrie Bradshaw said, “It's all about the desk. If I find the desk, the writing will come.” When it comes to the desk; it’s deeply personal. You can really select something super cool, practical, unique, custom, thrifted or even crafted by your own hands. If you spend a lot of time at the desk in your Home Office, the desk needs to work for you. If your desk annoys you, is broken, or has significant damage, this influences the energy in all your work endeavours. This piece must be well cared for, hold you right, and you must actually like it.

Find Your Place

This can be a specific chair in your office, or a specific area in a wider landscape. This may also be an accessible coffee shop or restaurant that you love — near your place of work. But when it comes to your vocation and skills, find the line of work that feels most natural and easy for you. Or, fall into the rhythm at the office in a way that suits you, personally. Are you somewhere you don’t belong? Don’t be afraid to leave.
